A TIG torch back cap is easy to overlook until the torch will not fit where you need it, the tungsten will not seat correctly, or a replacement cap will not thread onto the torch body. The key is to match the back cap to the torch series first, then choose a length that fits the job and the tungsten you intend to use.
This guide covers the common 2 Series and 3 Series back caps used on many industry-standard TIG torches. CK Worldwide identifies the 9/20 family as 2 Series and the 17/18/26 family as 3 Series in its current TIG product catalog. The back-cap families are not interchangeable just because the caps look similar.
What the back cap actually does
The back cap threads into the rear of the torch body and works with the torch's collet system to retain the tungsten electrode. It also closes the rear of the torch assembly. Because the cap extends behind the torch body, its length affects how much rear clearance the torch needs.
A shorter cap reduces the amount of material projecting behind the torch head. In practice, that can make a torch easier to position around corners, tubing, inside frames, or other tight access. A longer cap gives more room for a longer section of tungsten behind the torch body. That is a physical fit consideration, not a welding-performance rating by itself.
Start by identifying the torch series
Do not order by cap length alone. CK Worldwide's catalog groups common torches this way:
- 2 Series: CK9, CK20 and related 2 Series torches use the smaller 2 Series consumable family.
- 3 Series: CK17, CK18, CK26 and related 3 Series torches use the larger 3 Series consumable family.
That distinction matters because the thread pattern and back-cap body are different between these families. If you are replacing an existing cap, identify the torch model or compare the exact manufacturer part number before ordering.
2 Series: long, medium, and short back caps
CK Worldwide lists three common 2 Series back-cap lengths in its 2026 parts list:
- Long: 200L, cross-reference 41V24
- Medium: 200M, cross-reference 41V35
- Short: 200S, cross-reference 41V33
ArcWeld currently stocks all three Weldmark versions for 9/20-style torches: the 41V24 long back cap, 41V35 medium back cap, and 41V33 short back cap.
Use the long cap when rear clearance is not a problem and you want maximum room behind the torch body. The medium version is a useful compromise when you want less rear projection without going to the shortest configuration. The short cap minimizes rear length, but the tungsten must be cut or selected so it fits the shorter internal space while still providing the required front-end stick-out for the job.
3 Series: 17, 18, and 26-style torches
For 3 Series torches, CK's catalog identifies the common long cap as 300L / 57Y02 and the short cap as 300S / 57Y04. ArcWeld currently stocks both the 57Y02 long back cap and the 57Y04 short back cap for 17/18/26-style torches.
Again, do not use the 57Y02 or 57Y04 merely because the cap looks close to one from a 9 or 20 torch. Match the torch family and part number first.
How to choose the length for the job
Choose a long cap when: rear clearance is generous, you prefer to use more of a standard-length tungsten before trimming it shorter, or you want the conventional full-length configuration.
Choose a medium cap when: your 2 Series torch needs less rear projection but you do not need the minimum possible length. This is often a useful middle ground for bench work and moderate access restrictions.
Choose a short cap when: the torch must fit into restricted spaces or the rear of the torch is hitting the work, fixture, tube, or surrounding structure. Plan on using a shorter tungsten section so the cap can seat fully without forcing the electrode.
Do not force a cap that does not seat correctly
If a back cap starts crooked, binds immediately, will not tighten normally, or leaves the assembly visibly misaligned, stop and confirm the part. Cross-threading a torch body is a much more expensive problem than returning the wrong back cap.
Inspect the cap's threads and sealing components before installation. CK's current parts listings identify these back caps as assemblies with O-rings. Replace damaged parts with the correct manufacturer-compatible components rather than adding sealant or improvising a repair.
Back-cap length does not set tungsten stick-out
The back cap only changes the room available behind the torch. The tungsten's working stick-out at the front still depends on the cup, gas-lens or collet-body setup, joint access, shielding requirements, and the welding procedure. Do not use a short back cap as a reason to extend the tungsten farther from the cup than the setup can shield properly.
If you are also changing the front-end setup, review our TIG gas-lens setup guide. For torch selection and machine connections, see How to Choose a TIG Torch.
Quick ordering checklist
- Identify the exact TIG torch model.
- Confirm whether it uses 2 Series or 3 Series consumables.
- Check the existing back-cap part number when possible.
- Choose long, medium, or short based on rear clearance and usable tungsten length.
- Inspect the cap, threads, and O-ring before installation.
- Do not mix 9/20 and 17/18/26 back-cap families.
